Gender bias: how LGBTQ people are treated differently

Gender bias: this also has an impact on the LGBTQ community!

As a community, we are well aware of the multitude of prejudices that affect us every day. Life can be difficult, sometimes even the simplest tasks become more difficult due to the perceptions and actions of others. Over time, we have worked hard, together, to overcome what limits our chances and we have made great progress. Although some aspects of our identity are unique to the LGBTQ community, prejudice exists and persists on an even larger scale and affects us as well.

Gender bias is prevalent today

We have all heard of gender bias before, it is present all over the world. What's incredibly surprising is how widespread this is today and how it affects us all, especially members of the LGBTQ community. See these examples:

In company : We've heard it time and time again, women just don't earn as much as men. But sometimes percentage differences are hard to conceptualize. In 2021, Bussiness.org shared one of the clearest ways to understand the depth of this problem. This is called the stop payment method. “The pay stop dates are based on the day of the year that women start working for free based on the gender pay gap in this state. These dates are based on a working calendar that omits weekends. This calendar does not take public holidays into account. Two of the most interesting findings of this study are that there is no state in the country where women have a higher average salary than men, and, on average, October 29 is the date that women “cease to be paid”; the national pay gap is 18%.

Income related to gender bias specifically affects the LGBTQ community. According MSNBC, “Gender-based income inequality is particularly pronounced among LGBT couples. Census data shows that the average household income for a female same-sex couple is 30% less than for a male same-sex couple.

In the media : Today we see more women in TV news and movies than ever before. However, many women still don't believe they are accurately portrayed in television, film, and advertising. Very often the issues that women face, such as weight, age, and pregnancy, are not portrayed accurately. Even though things are better today than in the past, the media still have important improvements to make.

In politics : Gender bias in politics is still present across the country. Some people refused to vote for a specific ticket because a woman was running on it. Female contestants face far more comments about their appearance, clothing, weight, and "temperament" than their male counterparts. Sexism and gender bias in politics are visible and affect opportunities for all.

As members of the LGBTQ community, we are intimately familiar with prejudice and how it affects opportunities and life in general. We continue to support equality for women andequality for all, including those who identify as LGBTQ. This is why we must proclaim loud and clear our values and our LGBT membership.. Whether you are gay, trans, lesbian, bi… claiming it is something essential in order to change prejudices. Demonstrating and claiming our rights together will make it possible to fight against discrimination, against homophobia and against injustice.

Choosing one's sexual orientation is a universal right and claiming it remains a prideThe LGBT community has always been one of the most oppressed communities and experiencing the most discrimination on a daily basis, which is why campaigning is essential.

It is therefore important for all members of the community to wear, show, proudly brandish their drapeau or his pins, a symbol of tolerance and love.
