Top 7 myths about transgender and transvestite people

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of ignorance in the heads of cis people. That's why we decided to create an article quoting and explaining the absurdity of some of the most common myths about transvestites and transgender people.

Let's start with one of the BIGGEST myths of all:

Transgender women, transvestites and drag queens are all the same.

Uh no.

These are separate groups and the terms are not interchangeable, in short, sit down and let's find out together some of the common transgender terms:

  • transgender women – People who were assigned male at birth but identify as female. Many transgender women are prescribed hormones or undergo surgery, but transgender identity is not dependent on medical procedures.
  • Transvestites – Men, usually heterosexual men, who occasionally wear clothing, makeup and accessories associated with women. This activity is a form of gender expression and is not performed for entertainment purposes. Transvestites do not want to change sex permanently or live full time as women.
  • Drag queens – Men, usually gay men, who dress like women for the purpose of entertainment.
  • Not gender-conforming – Term used to describe some people whose gender expression is different from conventional expectations of masculinity and femininity. The term is not synonymous with transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone identifies as gender non-conforming
  • Non-binary and/or genderqueer – Terms used by some people who perceive their gender identity and/or gender expression as falling outside the categories of male and female. The term is not synonymous with transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone identifies as non-binary and/or genderqueer.
